"I was up on my knees, halfway to my feet, and scrambling for the door before I finished thinking this, even though I knew you couldn't run away from a vampire. I had forgotten that I was chained to the wall." ~p. 26,

Robin McKinley's Sunshine

I had forgotten I had this book, I'd bought it so long ago, but if I knew it was this good, I wouldn't have waited so long to read it!

This is about Sunshine, who went to the lake one day for a walk. She was captured by a group of vampires, and brought to a house in the woods. Chained and unable to escape, they left her as a bait for another vampire, their gang leader's enemy.

As the night wore on, and the vampire still hasn't killed her, even though he looked emaciated and was very hungry, she found out that he needed her help more than she realized.

All I can say it, what an amazing book! I loved it! And it's another book to add to my favorite list.

"Oh my God. It's him. The same dark eyes. The same lines etched around them. The stubble's gone, but it's definitely him. It's the man from the plane." ~p. 72,

Sophie Kinsella's Can You Keep a Secret?

I just finished this book by Sophie Kinsella. I've never read her Shopaholic series because I'm wary of series, but I decided to try this one because it was a stand-alone book, and I love the premise.

It's about Emma who sits next to a stranger on a plane and tells him all her secrets. Secrets about her boyfriend, about how she lied in her resume, about her weight, about her colleagues, and other really juicy secrets.

Of course, after the flight she expects to never see him again, but of course she does! And it turns out he's her boss!

This is a really fun read, and I finished it in one sitting. I think I'm finally out of my reading funk and can go back to heavy books!

"I was careful to make sure Hugh never smelled alcohol on my breath. He rarely came close to me anyway and I developed a trick of having my head bent over some task - mending or washing up - when he came home, so he just used to kiss the top of my head." ~p. 155, Linda Gillard's A Lifetime Burning

I finished this book a few days ago, but it's stayed on my mind until now because it was such an emotionally intense book.

It's about the hopeless life of a woman, Flora, who has only ever wanted to find happiness but suffers so much trying to achieve it. In childhood, her musically talented twin brother outshines her, so she decides to go to drama school. Then she tries to find love and at age 21, marries a man twice her age. Later when she's older, she has a scandalous affair with her brother's son, her own nephew.

At the beginning of the book, Flora isn't portrayed as very likable at all, and later you realize that she'd been misunderstood. While you may not agree with the things she does and the way she feels, you understand why she's the way she is, and you can't help but feel sorry for her.

This book is extremely controversial and some people may hate it, but if you can keep an open mind and allow yourself to look through Flora's perspective, you may gain something valuable from it.

It's emotionally difficult to read, and can be quite depressing too, but that's how I feel about Wally Lamb's books, and I think his books are worthy reads.

My Teaser:

I've just finished reading this book by Michael Ende, the author of the more widely known The Neverending Story. And I loved it!

It is one of the best books I've ever read, possibly in the top 10 list of my favorite books! I must admit that I'm guilty for judging this book by the cover, I would've read it much sooner if it wasn't because of that, but I'm so glad I finally did. =)

I've not finished The Lucifer Effect, but I'm taking a break from it. It's been really heavy reading, and I just needed to get my mind off it for a while. Here's a teaser from a book I'm reading for my reading group:

"From nearer in the blackness I began hearing loud expirations and groans and grunts and various wet mouth sounds. The idea of Orange Juice stirring was too much for my nerves to bear, so I did not consider it." ~p.119, Yann Martel's Life of Pi

Because everyone seems to be enjoying teasers from this book, and because it's a long and 'heavy' book and I'm still reading it, here's another teaser from The Lucifer Effect.

"Group pressure from other guards placed significant importance on being a "team player," conforming to an emergent norm that demanded dehumanizing the prisoners in various ways. The good guard was a group deviant, and he suffered in silence by being outside the socially rewarding circle of the other guards on his shift." ~p.221, Philip Zimbardo's The Lucifer Effect: How Good People Turn Evil

And here's a teaser from another book I'm reading at the same time:

My Teaser:

I found this at a bargain bookstore on Sunday, and it caught my attention because I'm interested in human psychology and what makes people do the things they do.

This book is based on the results of an experiment where a group of students were placed in a mock prison. The study had to be terminated in less than a week, because the 'guards' had become sadistic and the 'prisoners' pathological.

The basic premise is that a good person, if put in a certain situation, can become evil and do things that they never thought they were capable of. Zimbardo asks us to think twice about our own capability to do evil, and to ask ourselves if we would really be capable of horrible acts when put in the right (or wrong) situations.

Quite honestly, I already know that if I had to, I could do anything to make sure I survived, because I have a very strong survival instinct. But of course, just because I can doesn't mean I will. There are always grey areas, and it always depends on individual situations.

"He is dumped into the Hole - with the distinction of being its first occupant. The guards show that they are united about one principle: they will not tolerate any dissent." ~p.51, Philip Zimbardo's The Lucifer Effect: How Good People Turn Evil
